Running a business in the Sunshine State offers incredible opportunities, but Queensland has its own unique set of rules. Whether you’re a tradie on the Gold Coast or a startup in Brisbane, staying on top of both State (QRO) and Federal (ATO) obligations is key.
1. The Queensland Payroll Tax Threshold For the 2025–26 financial year, the annual threshold is $1.3 million. Regional employers may be eligible for a 1% discount.
2. WorkCover QLD If you employ workers, accident insurance is mandatory. The average premium rate is currently $1.343 per $100 of wages. Wage declarations are due by 31 August each year.
3. Federal Perks & Super Changes The $20,000 instant asset write-off is available until 30 June 2026. Note that “Payday Super” becomes law on 1 July 2026—you must pay super at the same time as wages.
Compliance Checklist:
- Pay the 12% super rate (effective July 2025).
- Check the Business Queensland portal for local grants.
- Ensure your software is ready for Payday Super.
